The site for the Peace Corps commemorative work is a modestly sized - less than a quarter acre - but favorably located triangle of underutilized parkland near the heart of the nation's capital. The site is within easy walking distance of the U.S. Capitol Building and Capitol Grounds, Constitution Avenue, the National Mall, Union Station and a number of significant national monuments and museums. Two Metro stations and a number of hotels and restaurants are nearby.

Bounded by 1st Street, C Street and Louisiana Avenue, NW, the site is directly across Louisiana Avenue from Robert A. Taft Park. Overlooking 1st and C Streets are modern as well as historic, multi-story office buildings owned privately or by the federal government's General Services Administration (GSA).

Offering excellent pedestrian and vehicular access for visitors, the site is readily visible from surrounding areas while providing attractive views from the site of its surroundings.

Site Analysis

The site analysis drawings below document the site context and on-site attributes and conditions. Concrete sidewalks of varying widths and condition wrap around the site, with a number of utility manholes in or adjacent to the sidewalks. Parking meters for curbside parking, a bus stop, streetlights and traffic signals stand next to curbs along the surrounding streets. Vegetation on the site consists of several deciduous trees and a grass panel. The design competition asks participants to generate curb-to-curb design concepts, i.e., encompassing the entire area within the street curbs.

This drawing shows on-site existing conditions: vegetation, sidewalks, utility structures, curbside parking and the bus stop along Louisiana Avenue. Alignment of 1st Street, N.W. sidewalk around 2" caliper tree does not have to be maintained. Design concepts should encompass the entire area within the curb line.
